To ensure that your bike survives the winter well, it needs the right protection and care , especially in the cold season. Why? Snow, rain, mud and especially road salt can take a heavy toll on materials. This can result in functional limitations or signs of wear, for example on the brakes, tires or rims , as well as the appearance of rust on the paint or frame. With the right care, however, your bike will remain functional and well protected even in winter. Here you can find out what is important.

1. Regular cleaning – the key to a healthy bike

Even, or perhaps especially, in winter, it is inevitable that your bike will get dirty. The road salt on the roads and cycle paths in particular attacks the material and can cause long-term damage. It is therefore important to remove it in good time. Here are a few tips:

  • Dirt and salt can be removed more easily with warm water
  • A gentle bicycle cleaner or a mild soap protects the materials
  • When cleaning, pay particular attention to the chain, sprockets, brakes and bearings. These are the most sensitive and therefore most susceptible to damage areas on your bike.

Take your time and do a quick cleaning after each trip - this will save you time and hassle later.

2. Protection against corrosion – This is how everything stays rust-free

Wetness and cold are an invitation for rust. To prevent this, it is important...

  • Lubricate the chain regularly: Use a special winter chain oil that adheres well even in sub-zero temperatures.
  • to protect the frame: A protective spray seals the paint and protects it from salt and moisture.
  • Apply grease to bearings and screws : Even a thin layer prevents rust formation.

Extra tip: Stainless steel parts or aluminum accessories are particularly resistant to rust. In the long term, make sure that you use such components for your bike wherever possible.

3. Brakes and gears – safety first

The brakes have to work particularly reliably in winter. So make sure you clean the disc brakes regularly. It's best to use a proper brake cleaner to ensure optimum braking performance. Check the brake pads regularly too. Wetness and dirt cause them to wear out more quickly - replace them in good time!

Adjust your gears correctly. Ice and mud can block the gears. Regular maintenance ensures smooth shifting.

4. Protection from winter weather

Is your bike outside? Protect it from moisture and frost by using a cover and choosing the right parking spot .

A waterproof bike cover protects your bike from rain and snow. If possible, store your bike in a garage or basement.

With these simple tips, your bike will remain functional and ready for use even in winter. And if a major problem does arise, you can use our search function to find a bike repair shop near you that will be happy to give you advice and assistance.
